Volunteerism from a bird’s eye perspective

Yayasan Suria JB (YSJB) – Volunteerism from a bird’s eye perspective!

I was on my way to attend a funeral recently in Penang from Johor Bahru and I chanced upon sitting in a double-decker bus on my way back from Penang.

Woh! Being so high up and sitting on the top deck of the double-decker bus, the panoramic view was fantastic – one can see things that were never seen before from the view of a car, either as a driver or passenger!

Applying this from the perspective of a volunteer, one has to see volunteerism from a wider view, a bigger picture, one that encompasses everything & everything, serving humanity with love and humility.

YSJB is an organization that believes in serving everyone, regardless of their race or religion. We prioritize our clients, who are often in need, and treat them with respect and dignity, even if they are difficult to deal with. YSJB is all about taking a wider view of volunteerism and serving humanity with love and humility.

Let us illustrate:

  1.  YSJB’s core values have been to serve everyone, regardless of their race or religion, since we were recognized by ROS on September 14th, 2012.
  2. YSJB’s clients are our top priority. We treat them with respect and dignity, even if they are difficult to deal with. We refer to them as our “clients,” or “them,” and believe that they deserve to be treated with the utmost care & respect.
  3. YSJB looks at the bigger picture. We prioritize serving our clients, not the person running the NGO. Recently, a person wanted to donate to YSJB for tax exemption purposes, but the PIC of the NGO he wanted to support was not on good terms with YSJB. Despite this, YSJB accepted the donation and channeled it to the other NGO without any questions asked. We believe in being magnanimous.
  4. YSJB always goes the extra mile to serve their clients. We believe in humanity and always take the road less traveled.

  5. YSJB believes that success is not just about ourselves, but about helping others along the way. We believe in lifting others up and finishing the race together, with the motto “Others Before Self.”

  6. YSJB encourages cross-sharing volunteerism. Their volunteers are allowed to serve other NGOs as well, as long as the clients(the Poor & Needy) come first.
  7. YSJB does not tolerate volunteers who constantly complain. Our volunteers are unpaid, and if they are not happy, they are free to leave anytime. However, YSJB must be doing something right, as we get repeated volunteers. Companies and undergraduates from higher institutions of learning also collaborate with us.

Companies are seeing the values of volunteerism and they send their staff members to us for volunteering – the companies believe the staff members become better persons after volunteering.

To sum it up, YSJB’s core values prioritize serving everyone, regardless of their race or religion. Our clients come first, and we treat them with respect and dignity, even when dealing with difficult clients. We prioritize serving our clients, not the person running the NGO, and we always strive to make the world a better place for everyone. We believe in cross-sharing volunteerism and never lose hope in humanity. We firmly believe that any opportunity we have to do good or show kindness to others should be taken without delay.

“I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
